Questions this map answers
- Which U.S. state receives the most foundation grant funding?
- California receives the most foundation funding of any U.S. state: $42.4B across 375,407 itemized grants in IRS Form 990 filings, ahead of New York, Florida, Texas, Massachusetts.
- Which state’s foundations give the most grant money?
- Foundations headquartered in California give the most: $43.5B in itemized grants from 13,597 funders. Washington, DC punches far above its size — a small number of very large national foundations are based there.
- Why don’t a state’s "given" and "received" totals match?
- Because foundation money crosses state lines. Dollars are counted as "received" in the state where the recipient organization is located, and "given" in the state where the funder is headquartered — a New York foundation funding an Ohio nonprofit adds to New York’s given total and Ohio’s received total.
- Where does this data come from?
- Built from 236,000+ U.S. grantmaking foundations and 4.6 million itemized grant records in public IRS Form 990 / 990-PF filings (135,000+ funders with itemized giving history). Donor-advised-fund sponsors and other pass-through entities are excluded from both sides so the map reflects funders a nonprofit can actually approach.
