Month-over-Month Trend
Month-over-month comparison is paused. In August 2026 we changed what counts as an open opportunity — removing duplicate records, retired listings, and opportunities the funder no longer publishes. Snapshots taken before that change measure a different pool, so comparing them to today’s 4,974 would describe our own data cleanup rather than the funding landscape. Comparisons resume once two snapshots share the current definition.
What the Data Shows
Most open opportunities never publish a dollar figure. Only 1,942 of 4,974 (39%) state a per-award ceiling or a total program budget. Judged strictly on per-award size the figure is lower still — 66% can't be placed in an award-size bucket at all, because some funders leave the amount to negotiation and others publish only a program-wide total, which says nothing about what any single applicant receives. Every funding number on this page describes the priced subset, not the whole pool, and the median ($500K) is the figure most organizations should size against.
Federal sources are the single largest bucket at 37% of open opportunities, but state/regional, foundation, corporate, and local sources combined make up the majority of the catchable pool -- the federal government isn’t the only game in town.
49% of open opportunities carry no state-specific eligibility restriction. Nationwide/open-to-all eligibility is the norm, not the exception; state-restricted programs are a minority of the catchable pool.
Infrastructure, Transportation, and Environment are the largest categorized focus areas by open-opportunity count (a single grant can be tagged to more than one).
67% of open opportunities are rolling or have no fixed deadline. A hard once-a-year deadline is less common across the catchable pool than the phrase “grant deadline” implies.
487 opportunities close within the next 30 days -- organizations tracking deadlines manually risk missing a meaningful share of the near-term pool.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many grant opportunities are open right now?
GrantSonar currently tracks 4,974 open grant opportunities across federal, state, foundation, corporate, and local sources. 1,942 of them (39%) publish a funding amount, and those total $32B — counting each program's total budget where it is published, and its per-award ceiling otherwise. These figures update daily.
What counts as an "open" grant opportunity here?
An opportunity with a close date today or in the future (or no fixed close date -- rolling programs), that isn’t a historical award record, and whose status is active or open. Historical award/spending data (e.g. past NIH or USAspending records) is tracked separately and excluded from these open-opportunity figures.
How is this different from GrantSonar’s funder database numbers?
This page counts currently open grant opportunities. GrantSonar separately maintains a database of 236,000+ U.S. grantmaking foundations built from 4.6 million itemized IRS Form 990 / 990-PF grant records -- that's historical giving-pattern data used for funder research, not a live opportunity count.
How often is this page updated?
Daily. A cron job refreshes every figure on this page from the live database each morning. A monthly snapshot is also stored so month-over-month trends can be tracked over time.
